Hi! We’re Object Limited. We think that everything beautiful you want already exists in the world of secondhand, and we’re here to make it easier to find. We’re the most fun way to buy and sell vintage; a flea market without the digging and dust; the feeling of shopping your cool aunt’s closet.
Come visit our Vintage Bazaars or join us live on your phone to shop our sales as they happen.
Object Limited is much more than meets the eye….
Bisbee, Arizona is a town that was built on copper or, more specifically, the extraction of the prized mineral from the surrounding Mule Mountains. Most towns that emerge from a boom based on the exploitation of a nonrenewable resource share a common end – an inevitable depletion of the resource, a massive exodus of residents in the sudden absence of an industry, and, horror of horrors, a condemnation to a fate of “ghost town” tourism. OK, so Bisbee does have ghost tours, and hotels that market their rooms on the basis of how many miners, cowboys, and “soiled doves” met a gruesome end within their walls. But something else happened when the mine shut down in the mid-1970s that set Bisbee on a different course.
Suddenly there was space. Not just space, but grand, sweeping, impossibly intricate architectural masterpieces, all empty and well within the budget of even the most starving of artists. With the swing of the social pendulum, churches, ballrooms, theaters, and the halls of secret societies, most built for the exclusive enjoyment of railroad tycoons and mining magnates, were transformed by a new class of creative outsiders taking up residence against all odds in a town built into a canyon on the Arizona/Mexico border.
Decades later, that same creative energy drew us south through the desert, and inspired us to set up the home base for Object Limited’s operations in a turn-of-the-century Italianate building right on Main Street, the main floor of which once housed a Woolworth’s department store. Upstairs, we’ve dedicated space to continuing to support the artistic community that built the Bisbee that rose from the pit mine’s ashes, not as an Old West Disneyland, but a true, living hub for inspiration and creativity.
This isn’t to disregard the Bisbee of the past. Far from it, in fact, as we believe in history that lives and breathes in parallel to the present. It’s there, and unquestionably alive, in the copper hills with their gaping lavender scars, in the morphic resonance of objects formed and collected by hands across time, and in walls that might speak should we only stop to listen. In establishing the Object Limited Residency program, we seek to engage adventurous spirits in putting an ear to those walls, exploring the collective memory of this small but storied town, and mobilizing the latent creative potential therein.
Through this program, Object Limited provides selected artists and writers a private, light-flooded studio as well as complete living accomodations within the building, PR support, and an opportunity to share completed and in-progress work with the local and larger Southern Arizona community. We encourage 4-week residences as we’ve found that this is the ideal amount of time to acclimate to the environment, meaningfully engage with the community, reach effective studio rhythm, and, most importantly, produce in-depth work. However, applicants may select their ideal time frame between 2 and 4 weeks.
Greetings from the Wild West
